MENTAL HEALTH MATTERS
"Mental Health"- This term is so used in last weeks that I cannot stop myself from expressing my take on it. Why stay under the rock?
Disclaimer:
I am a learner and I may not be educated enough on the topic. I am not a professional. But we are shaped by what we learn and how we perceive it. Judging is not the right way to educate someone.
Why continue to live in a community where there is judgment, if we could promote awareness on the issue.
Now let's dive deep into it.
According to National Alliance on Mental Illness, one out of every five American is affected by mental health conditions.
Millions of people worldwide are fighting their struggles and battles with mental health in itself as well as the stigma of not being in a correct headspace because of the unusual behaviour of society towards the victims.
It has been a buzz since years that "A person who goes through mental illness does not require any sort of medical help". In India, talking about depression and anxiety is equivalent to a mild headache that can be cured by 2 hours of power nap. This stigma is eventually leading to discrimination between physically ill and mentally ill part of our society.
Negative attitude and beliefs for treating victims of this card is stopping public to express themselves in front of crowd. I don't mean that this needs a special attention. Not at all, don't get me wrong but it definitely needs some kind of guidance, help chain, trust building and continuous efforts to normalise being treated for NOT FEELING WELL.
The more the illness remains under the rock, the more people will think it's something to be ashamed of. Afterall it's your life and the power resides in your hands that how much you want to reveal such blemishes of your life. But trust me, the scars fade away when you treat them in a positive manner and not hiding it under the layers of phoney happiness.
Why does it takes a ton of efforts to accept your flaws? Because till date, all we have heard from around is BEING PERFECT is the only way you can live! That's so dumb of us actually, we all have believed in it at some point of our lives. Ironically, the small transformations in me, have stamped this in my mind that - "BEING IMPERFECT IS COMPLETELY PERFECT TO ME." I want all of you to repeat it twice and imprint these words in your veins.
As I mentioned, mental health is a fundamental component of health, recognition of mental disorders and awareness about its importance is limited.
Illness cannot be categorised on the basis of the visible sufferings to others. Every illness plays a crucial role be it physical, mental, emotional or social.
Increasing understanding and overcoming stigma through strategic communications and social mobilization are crucial steps towards strengthening mental health programmes.
Psychological well-being is a major part of mental health awareness.
Let me give you a context here that "LIFE IS NOT A RACE." Dont force yourself to do what you are not meant for. Make your own rules.
Don't let people decide what's good for you.
"EVERYONE IS GIVING THEIR HUNDRED PERCENT BEING IN THE SITUATION THEY ARE."
People are formatted to think in a way they are taught or what they actually know. Therefore many of them think that a person seeking help for depression, anxiety, panic attacks, etc. is just making it up for sympathy with is a completely wrong way of approach.
One should always extend a helping hand towards motivating and pulling each other out of the well of mental illness rather then pushing them into it.
This can only be done through not triggering yourself from the things that hit you hard. Boosting your self-esteem is the only way you can power your heart. Don't let the world affect you in a negative way.
And if you have someone around you who is facing such difficult times with their own please, I request you to help them in every possible way you could. Tell them that they aren't alone. Everyone is struggling and juggling through things that are unacceptable but need to be done. You can't even imagine how your baby steps can support them so much that maybe they start trusting and coping with the anxiousness.
Don't let anyone make you feel smaller in yourself by your physical appearance, thoughts and opinions. I know it's easier said than done but you got to do what you got to do.
Stop letting your harmful thoughts reduce your power to such an extent that you start doubting yourself. Remember- you are the greatest gift of God to you.
Other than this, seeking for medical help, therapists and proper medication brings you to a complete different lifestyle. Try talking to doctors or the people whom you are close to or whom you trust on. Putting your thoughts into words and letting toxic things flow out of your system brings joy in you.
I hope you feel a little better after reading this. May things work out for you in your favour. This was my small contribution for the world we are hiding ourselves in. Sending tons of positivity and love to all.
Thank You
Purna Jain.
